To have and to hold, to have and to hold⦠Hadnât that been a line in each of the weddings sheâd attended in the last five years. He wanted to have her. Heâd loved her. The memory of the heat of his arms around her, holding her, his lips pressed to hers.
Without her, he wasnât himself. It was a weighty and heady thought all at once. Were her goals more important than Barton? A mere month ago, the answer would have been ânoâ. She pressed the butterflies in her belly into submission as she walked back to the classroom for her books. She hadnât run, but after heâd kissed her into distraction, and told her he wanted her for always, heâd told her to go. Even now, her body rebelled. Her feet wanted to turn and rush right back to him and hold onto him until he told all his secrets. Until she figured out this sudden ache inside her.
While she hadnât learned anything about his past, she had learned there was power in her touch. He might want her, but with a glance, a word, heâd give her the world. All she had to do was give up everything sheâd ever wanted. Was it worth it? Could she give up every dream for Barton? She wasnât just here for herself. She was the first Arnsby to ever try to get an education. Wouldnât they be disappointed in her?
Her books lay in the classroom where sheâd left them, the board still a cloudy mess from Bartonâs rushed exit. It would take but a minute to put it to rights and then he wouldnât have to do it before he locked up. Because he was the only teacher, there was a long list of chores on his shoulders. She collected the rag and cleaning alcohol from under the desk and set to work. The smell was horrid, but the board soon gleamed black, ready for tomorrow.
Two minutes later, she reached the library and immediately found Izzy â in high dudgeon. âThere you are! I was wondering if youâd come by. Harland and Amos want to go to ice cream tomorrow. Weâll have to leave right after morning classes, or we wonât make it back in time for studying. So, will you go?â
A purely wicked thought took root before she could pluck it out. âIâm sorry, Izzy. Mr. Oleson assigned me more lines to do after you left for not leaving his room promptly and telling him he has turned into a weasel. I guess itâs just too hard to keep my mouth shut. I was to start by cleaning the board for him.â She held up the rag as proof, even though it wasnât true.
Izzyâs eyes widened. âWhy, Lula. Last time, you barely finished your lines and your homework. I think itâs just horrid that he would do that to you. Heâs been so different since he took over teaching. Maybe he just doesnât recall all the work we need to do.
